Observation Narrative
Plot located on the rocky, upper, NW-facing slope of Wolfpit Mountain, the highest elevation in the monadnock-like Southwest Mountains range of the inner Piedmont east of Charlottesville. The site is underlain by metabasalt of the Catoctin Formation and the plot is located on a ledgey outcrop with considerable, if shallow, soil development and boulder deposits below. Soil samples collected have impressively high calcium, magnesium, and manganese content. The vegetation is a dry, partially open woodland of stunted Fraxinus americana, with some Carya ovalis and Quercus montana in association. The shrub layer consists largely of tree saplings and the herb layer is patch-dominated by xerophytic graminoids - Carex pensylvanica, Danthonia spicata, Muhlenbergia sobolifera, and Elymus hystrix.
